Parents and Students,

We are going to have a great year in Math!  We are following the intermediate grading policy, which can be found in the student/parent handbook.  In general, your student will receive two grades for each subject - an academic grade and an effort grade.  Each trimester the students will start with a "clean slate" for both their academic and effort grade.  In Math, the grades will be broken down as follows:

Effort grade- will be divided into two categories:  responsibility and respect.  Each category will be given a 50 point total at the beginning of the trimester.  Five points will be deducted for each late assignment, not having supplies, and minor behavior problems.  Larger infractions will have larger deductions.  It will also be calculated from some homework assignments, parents signing progress reports, and math journals.  Some assignments done in class will be awarded an effort grade, which students must be present to receive.  Once an effort grade has been earned, it cannot be improved.

Academic grade- will be calculated by graded homework, quizzes, tests and other assigned projects.  Students that are wanting to redo homework assignments to improve their grade may do so before the day of the chapter test for a maximum of 90%.  When a student turns in an assignment late, the highest score that can be earned is 80%.  All redone work and late work must be checked by the student in the classroom before or after school, with the new grade circled at the top.  All redo's must have all work shown.  Retakes will be available for chapter tests, however all homework for the chapter must be turned in for a retake to be offered.  Corrections must be made to the entire original test in order to do the retake.  The maximum grade on the test will be the lowest percent in the grade category earned (so if a student retakes the test and gets a 93%, the grade posted in Power School will be 90%).  The day of the retake will be announced in advance, and it can be taken before or after school and sometimes during homeroom, but cannot be done during the regular class period. Quizzes are worth fewer points than tests and cannot be retaken.  Instead, the incorrect answers on the quiz can be redone for half credit.

Math Journal will be done in class in a composition notebook that is designated for math only.  If students are absent they need to get the notes from another student.  Math journals will be checked at the end of each chapter and will receive a grade.  Math journals are a great tool to help the students with their homework.

Assignment Packets will be distributed at the beginning of the chapter.  If a student loses their packet, they will need to reprint a new one from the assignments on Power School, or purchase a new one from the office for $.50 and take the receipt to your teacher to get a new one.

Absent Policy:  The best place for your child to be is in class!  If he or she needs to be absent for any reason, your child is still responsible for what is taught that day and the assignment(s) missed.  There are some videos listed under "chapter resources" on the math 6 website that will help your child in getting the information that was missed.  Work needs to be completed and corrected within 1 day per day absent or the late work penalty will be applied.  Please notify the office when your child will be absent.
